What Is GEO? How to Show Up in ChatGPT and AI Answers
22 September 2026 · By Mohammad Khalil · SEO & GEO
ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews now answer many questions directly, before anyone clicks a link. GEO is the work of making sure your business is one of the sources those answers rely on. This guide explains what GEO is, how it relates to SEO, and the steps that actually help.
What is GEO, in plain words?
GEO stands for generative engine optimization. It means shaping your website and your wider online presence so that AI assistants understand your business, trust it, and mention or cite it when they answer a question. You can find a short definition in our dictionary entry on GEO.
A classic search engine shows a list of links. An AI assistant writes an answer, and sometimes shows the sources it used. When someone in Amman asks "Which clinic does teeth whitening near Abdoun?", there is no page two. Either your business is named in the answer, or it is not.
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. GEO builds on SEO. Several AI assistants search the web in real time before they answer, and they lean on search indexes to find pages. If Google and Bing cannot crawl and understand your site, AI tools will struggle too.
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank pages in search results | Be mentioned or cited inside AI answers |
| Where | Google and Bing results pages | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews |
| Main unit | Pages and keywords | Your brand as an entity, and the questions people ask |
| Success signal | Rankings and clicks | Mentions, citations and referral visits |
Think of SEO as the foundation and GEO as the next floor. You need both, and the work overlaps more than it differs. That is why our SEO & GEO Mastery: Rank on Google and in AI Search course in Jordan teaches them together, not as two separate skills.
How do AI assistants decide which sources to use?
No company publishes its exact rules, and they change often. But the same patterns show up again and again:
- Crawlable pages. Your key content is in plain HTML, not locked inside images, PDFs or login walls. Your robots.txt file does not block the search and AI crawlers you want to reach.
- Clear answers. A paragraph that answers one question in two or three sentences is easy for a model to understand and quote. A long, vague page is not.
- Entity consistency. Your business name, address, phone number, services and description match across your website, Google Business Profile, social profiles and directories. Mixed signals make a model less sure who you are.
- Mentions on trusted sites. News sites, industry publications, directories and review platforms that talk about you act as third-party proof. This is close to how backlinks work in SEO, but a plain mention without a link still helps.
- Structured data. Schema markup labels your business, products, articles and FAQs in a format machines read without guessing.
What are the practical steps to show up in ChatGPT and AI answers?
Start with your most important pages: home, main services or products, and contact. Then work through these steps.
- Write answer-first content. Under each heading, give the direct answer in the first one or two sentences. Add detail after that.
- Add FAQ sections. Use the real questions customers ask your sales team or on WhatsApp. Keep each answer short and specific.
- Add schema markup. Use Organization or LocalBusiness on your site, Product on product pages, Article on blog posts and FAQPage where you have FAQs. Google now shows FAQ rich results for only a small set of sites, but the markup still describes your content clearly.
- Make your business details identical everywhere. Same name spelling in Arabic and English, same phone, same address, same opening hours.
- Consider an llms.txt file. This is a proposal, not an official standard: a short Markdown file at your site root that summarizes your business and links your key pages for language models. No major AI company has confirmed that it uses llms.txt to choose sources, so treat it as a cheap, optional extra, not a guarantee. We publish one on this site.
- Get cited by others. Guest articles, interviews, partnerships, local directories, "best of" lists and genuine customer reviews all create mentions that AI tools can find.
- Keep your SEO healthy. Fast pages, correct indexing and a clean site structure remain the base everything else stands on.
Why is Arabic content a big GEO opportunity?
When someone asks a question in Arabic, AI assistants try to answer in Arabic. In many niches we work in across Jordan and the Gulf, there are far fewer detailed, well-structured Arabic pages than English ones. That gap is your opening.
- Write Arabic pages natively, not as a quick translation of the English page.
- Use the words people actually type, including common spellings of brand and product names.
- Keep platform and product terms the way your customers use them.
- Link each Arabic page to its English version with correct hreflang tags.
A well-written Arabic page that answers a specific question clearly can become the source an AI tool relies on, simply because few competitors wrote one.
How can you check whether AI assistants mention your business?
There is no single dashboard for this yet, so build a simple routine.
- List 10 to 20 real questions your customers ask, in Arabic and English. Include local ones such as "best digital agency in Amman".
- Ask them in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google (where AI Overviews appear). Answers vary by session, so use a fresh chat each time.
- Record three things: were you mentioned, were you linked, and was the information correct?
- Repeat monthly with the same questions so you can see change over time.
- Watch referral traffic in your analytics from domains such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com.
- Check your snippets. Many systems read your page title and meta description first. Use our free Google Search Preview tool to see how yours look and tighten them.
Note that Google currently counts clicks from AI Overviews inside the normal Search Console performance report, with no separate filter. So watch the trend of questions you track, not just one number.

Frequently asked questions
How long does GEO take to show results?
There is no fixed timeline. Changes to your own pages can be picked up once they are recrawled, but mentions on other sites build over months, so track the same questions every month.
Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?
You cannot pay to be cited inside the organic answer itself. Some AI platforms are adding ads, but those are labelled separately from the answer.
Does a small local business in Jordan need GEO?
Yes, if customers ask AI tools for recommendations in your category. Local businesses often win by having consistent details, clear service pages and genuine reviews.
Where is the SEO & GEO course taught and how much does it cost?
It runs in person in Amman or live online, over 6 weeks and 12 live sessions. The price is 270 JOD, or 3 payments of 90 JOD.
