How to Start a Shopify Store in Jordan: Payments, Shipping and Costs
18 September 2026 · By Mohammad Khalil · Shopify & E-commerce
Shopify lets you open a professional online store without writing code. For sellers in Jordan, the real questions are about payments, shipping and whether the numbers work. This guide walks you through each step, from choosing products to calculating your profit per order.
Is Shopify a good fit for sellers in Jordan and the Gulf?
For most product businesses, yes. The audience is there: 92.5% of people in Jordan were online at the start of 2025, according to DataReportal, Digital 2025: Jordan. Shopify handles hosting, security, checkout and updates, so you focus on products and marketing.
It fits well if you:
- Sell physical products you can stock or source reliably.
- Want one store that can serve Jordan and the Gulf in Arabic and English.
- Plan to run ads and need clean tracking and a fast checkout.
Keep two points in mind. First, Shopify's own built-in payment processing is not available to businesses in Jordan at the time of writing, so you connect a third-party gateway (more on that below). Second, a monthly plan plus paid apps is a fixed cost, so your margins need to cover it.
Step 1: How should you plan products and margins?
Do this before you open an account. Most stores that struggle in their first months chose products without checking the numbers.
- Pick a focused range. Start with one category you understand, not 300 random items.
- Know your full product cost. Include the purchase price, import or shipping to Jordan, customs, and packaging.
- Set prices in JOD with room for marketing. Your price must cover product cost, delivery, payment fees and the ad cost to win each order.
- Check the competition. Look at what local stores and Instagram sellers charge for similar items.
Raising your average order value (AOV) with bundles or a free-delivery threshold is often the easiest way to make the margins work.
Step 2: Which plan, theme and languages should you set up?
Plan and theme
Shopify changes its plans and prices from time to time, so check Shopify's pricing page for current details. Shopify usually offers a trial period, which is enough time to build and test your store. For most new stores, the entry-level plan is enough. Upgrade later when your order volume justifies it.
For the theme:
- Start with a free theme from the Shopify Theme Store. They are fast and well supported.
- Choose one that looks good on mobile first, since most shoppers will browse on their phones.
- Confirm the theme supports right-to-left (RTL) layout if you will sell in Arabic.
- Install as few apps as possible. Every app can slow the store and add a monthly cost.
Arabic, English and currencies
Shopify Markets lets you group countries and set the language, currency and domain for each one.
- Create markets. For example, one for Jordan and one for the Gulf countries you ship to.
- Add Arabic as a language. Use Shopify's Translate & Adapt app to translate products, pages and checkout text, then review the Arabic yourself. Machine translation is rarely good enough on its own.
- Test the RTL layout on product pages, the cart and checkout.
- Set currencies carefully. Show JOD to Jordanian shoppers. Whether Gulf customers can actually pay in their own currency depends on your payment gateway, so confirm this before you switch on local currencies.
Step 3: How do payments and shipping work for a Shopify store in Jordan?
Payment options
You will usually combine more than one method:
- A local payment gateway that supports Jordan. Look for one that integrates with Shopify, settles in JOD to a Jordanian bank account and supports the cards your customers use. Ask about fees, payout times and the documents required before you sign.
- Cash on delivery (COD). Still common in Jordan and the Gulf. Shopify lets you add it as a manual payment method. Expect some refused orders, so confirm each order by phone or WhatsApp before shipping.
- Card payments. Credit and debit cards are processed through your gateway. Wallet options such as Apple Pay depend on what your gateway supports.
Run at least one real test order with every method before launch.
Shipping in Jordan and to the Gulf
You have two main routes. Local delivery uses your own driver or a local delivery company, which suits Amman and nearby cities. Courier partners handle deliveries across Jordan and to the Gulf, including customs paperwork for cross-border orders.
Set up shipping zones in Shopify so each region gets the right rate:
| Zone | What it includes | How to set the rate |
|---|---|---|
| Amman | Your main city | Flat rate, with free delivery above a set order value |
| Rest of Jordan | Other governorates such as Irbid, Zarqa and Aqaba | Slightly higher flat rate based on your courier's cost |
| Gulf | Countries such as KSA, UAE, Kuwait and Qatar | Weight-based or courier-calculated rates; state clearly who pays duties |
Show delivery times on product pages. Unclear delivery terms are a common reason for cart abandonment.
What legal basics and launch checks do you need?
Business basics
- A registered business. Most payment gateways require one. Ask an accountant about registration and tax obligations in Jordan.
- Store policies. Refund, shipping, privacy and terms of service pages. Shopify provides templates; adapt them to how you actually work.
- A custom domain and a clear contact page with your phone and WhatsApp number.
- Honest product information: real photos, sizes, materials and delivery times.
Launch checklist
- Place test orders with every payment method.
- Check every page on a phone, in Arabic and English.
- Confirm shipping rates for each zone at checkout.
- Translate order confirmation and shipping emails into Arabic.
- Install your analytics and ad pixels, and test that purchases are tracked.
- Turn on Shopify's abandoned checkout emails.
- Make sure product pages load fast and every product has clear photos.
How do you calculate profit per order?
Use this simple formula for every order:
Profit per order = selling price − product cost − packaging − delivery cost you pay − payment fees − ad cost per order
A hypothetical example: you sell a product for 35 JOD. It costs you 14 JOD, packaging 1 JOD and delivery 3 JOD. If your ads cost 8 JOD to win each order, you keep 9 JOD before payment fees and returns.
Your ad cost per order depends heavily on your conversion rate. If more visitors buy, each order costs less to win. Run your own numbers with our free Shopify Profit Calculator before you set prices. If you plan to grow through ads, our Meta Ads for Sales, Leads & WhatsApp Messages course is a natural next step.
