Meta Is Removing Manual Placements: What Changes for Your Ads
30 October 2026 · By Mohammad Khalil · Paid Ads
Meta is removing the option to pick placements manually for most of the campaigns businesses run. In Sales, Leads, Engagement and App promotion campaigns, you no longer choose where your ads appear at the ad set level: Meta spreads the budget across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Threads and Audience Network using Advantage+ placements. Awareness and Traffic campaigns keep manual placements for now. You still have control, but it now comes from your creative, from placement value rules and from account-level exclusions.
What exactly is Meta changing?
Meta's help page says that for these objectives "you no longer choose placements manually at the ad set level". Trade press reported the change on 13 October 2026, after advertisers first saw in-product notices in August (Social Samosa, Relevant Audience).
| Campaign objective | Manual placements |
|---|---|
| Sales | Removed |
| Leads | Removed |
| Engagement | Removed |
| App promotion | Removed |
| Awareness | Still available |
| Traffic | Still available |
The change is rolling out gradually, and Meta says it "may not be available to you yet". If your account still shows manual placements in a Sales campaign, expect it to disappear soon.
This is the latest step in a longer trend. Meta has already removed several placement controls from ad sets over the past two years, and since February 2026 the unified Advantage+ campaign structure allows placement exclusions only at the ad account level.
Why is Meta doing this?
Meta says that in an experiment, ad sets using Advantage+ placements had about a 10% lower cost per result on average than ad sets with manual placements. The logic is simple: the more places the system can show your ad, the more chances it has to find cheaper conversions.
Treat that number as Meta's own claim. Meta has not published the dates, sample size or objectives of the test, and an average across thousands of advertisers says little about your account. What matters is your own cost per acquisition before and after the change.
What control do you still have?
You lose the checklist of placements, but you keep four real controls.
- Creative for each placement. One ad can hold up to 10 images and videos, and each one can be customised by placement: crop, aspect ratio, text and link. Meta will not show your ad in placements your assets do not support, and Ads Manager warns you when a placement has no suitable media.
- Placement value rules. You can tell Meta that conversions from a placement are worth more or less to you, and the system bids accordingly. Reports on value rules say bids can be raised a lot but lowered by at most 90% (PPC Land), so a value rule can reduce a placement but cannot switch it off completely.
- Account-level exclusions. In your ad account settings you can exclude Audience Network (including rewarded video), Facebook Marketplace and the Facebook right column. These exclusions apply to every campaign in the account, and Meta now also lets you set them per objective.
- Brand safety controls. Block lists and inventory filters in the Brand Safety and Suitability settings still apply when Advantage+ placements is on.
| What you want | How to do it now |
|---|---|
| Stop ads on Audience Network | Account-level exclusion |
| Spend less on a weak placement | Placement value rule |
| Better results in Reels and Stories | Upload 9:16 video and customise it for those placements |
| Keep ads away from unsafe content | Block lists and inventory filters |
| Only Instagram feed, for example | No longer possible in these objectives |
What should you do now?
Start with your creative, because creative is now how you steer placements.
- Make every ad work in three shapes. Prepare 9:16 for Reels and Stories, 4:5 for feeds and 1:1 as a fallback. A single horizontal image forces Meta to crop it badly or skip placements.
- Use the per-placement customisation. Give Reels a vertical video with captions and the key message in the first two seconds, and give feeds a clear product image with the offer.
- Exclude only with a reason. Audience Network can bring cheap clicks of low quality for some businesses. If your data shows that, exclude it at account level. If you have no data, test before you exclude.
- Watch the right numbers. Judge each campaign by cost per sale, cost per lead or ROAS, not by which placement looks cheapest in the breakdown.
- Check your tracking. With fewer manual levers, Meta's optimisation depends even more on clean conversion data from the Meta Pixel and the Conversions API. Our GA4, Meta Pixel and Conversions API checklist shows what to verify.
What does this mean for businesses in Jordan and the Gulf?
For most stores and service businesses in the region, the impact is smaller than it sounds. Most profitable Meta campaigns already ran on Advantage+ placements. The businesses that feel it most are those that restricted ads to Instagram only, or to feeds only, because their creative only worked there.
The fix is the same: produce vertical video, write Arabic and English text that fits each format, and let your results, not your habits, decide where the budget goes. Our guide to click-to-WhatsApp ads shows how to build ads that work across placements and bring conversations.

Frequently asked questions
Can I still choose placements manually in Meta Ads?
Only in Awareness and Traffic campaigns. In Sales, Leads, Engagement and App promotion campaigns, Meta is removing manual placement selection at the ad set level, and the change is rolling out gradually.
How do I stop my ads from showing on Audience Network?
Use the account-level placement exclusions in your ad account settings. They apply to every campaign in the account and can also be set per objective.
Will Advantage+ placements lower my costs?
Meta says its test showed about 10% lower cost per result on average, but results vary by account. Compare your cost per sale or lead before and after, and make sure your creative fits every format.
What creative sizes do I need for Meta ads now?
Prepare 9:16 vertical video or images for Reels and Stories, 4:5 for feeds, and 1:1 as a fallback, then customise each asset per placement in the ad.
